One day, a strange old man appeared. “May I share your lunch?” He asked.
“I don’t have much, but you can share it with me,” Hans said.
When Hans opened his lunch, he found it had turned into a marvelous feast. Hans had never seen so much food! He ate and ate.
When they had finished, the old man thanked Hans for his kindness. “For being so kind,” said the man, “I am going to give you something very special.”
The old man pointed to an old tree nearby. “Chop down that tree and take what you find,” he said.
Then the old man disappeared as quickly as he had arrived.
Hans chopped down the tree, and nestling inside he found a beautiful golden goose. Hans was very excited. He picked up the goose and said, “I will take this goose and seek my fortune.
That night, Hans arrived at an inn. It was here that he decided to rest until morning.
The landlord and his three daughters saw the golden goose. They wanted to take it from Hans, but he kept it close beside him all night
The next morning, he paid the landlord with one golden feather before leaving. But the oldest daughter wanted a golden feather. As Hans left, she touched the golden goose. She stuck fast.
“Help, help,” she cried.
But Hans walked on, saying, “I can’t stop now. I have a long way to go.”
The girl’s cries brought her two sisters running after her. They rushed up to pull her away. But as soon as they touched her, they, too, stuck fast. Try as they might, they could not let go
They had to hop and skip after Hans and his golden goose, shouting, “Help, help.”
But Hans walked on, saying, “I can’t stop now. I have a long way to go.”
So on they all stumbled until they met the village police officer. He rushed up, crying, “Let go of those people at once. As he pulled at the arm of the girl, he, too, was stuck fast.
The police officer had to hop along behind, crying, “Help, help. “But Hans walked on, saying,” I can’t stop now. I have a long way to go.
So along they all went, shouting and hopping until a farmer working in the fields heard their cries. “Let go of those people!” He yelled. He reached out and grabbed the police officer.
But as he tugged at the police officer’s coat, the farmer stuck fast and had to hop along behind, shouting, “Help, help.” But Hans walked on, saying, “I can’t stop now. I have a long way to go. “
On and on the long line of people went until they met the farmer’s wife. “Let go of my husband,” she cried. She rushed up and grabbed at her husband’s coat sleeve.
But as she tugged at the farmer’s sleeve, she too stuck fast and had to hop along behind, shouting, “Help, help.” But Hans just walked on, saying, “I can’t stop now. I have a long way to go.
Soon Hans and his golden goose and the six hopping, shouting, angry people arrived in a great city. In this city lived the king and his daughter
Now, Hans knew the king’s daughter was the saddest princess in the world. She never smiled or laughed. The king was so worried he had offered her hand in marriage to anyone who could make her laugh.
Hans crossed the square in front of the king’s palace with his six hopping, shouting followers stuck behind him. The princess on the balcony looked down to see what the fuss was about.
When she saw the long line of people hopping and skipping across the square, she began to laugh. She laughed and laughed and laughed.
The king was overjoyed that the princess was happy and right away said the poor woodcutter could marry his daughter.
Hans put the golden goose on the floor so he could take the princess’s hand. The spell was broken, and all the people were freed
Hans married the princess, and the two of them and the golden goose lived happily ever after.
